In present-day society, plastic containers and utensils are extensively used in big cities and the countryside alike. They are so common-place and I would hazard the guess that each one of us has seen, at one time or another, the unsightly scene of plastic bags swirling in the wind. These plastic shopping bags, chopsticks, to-go boxes and mineral-water bottles, to name but a few, when not properly disposed of, create a colossal amount of non-biodegradable refuse. Therefore, some people argue that we have embarked upon a “兄谨throw-away” era when plastic rubbish is largely dumped indiscriminately and irresponsibly (this act is often labeled “white pollution” on account of the color of plastic wastes). Personally, I wholeheartedly support their view.
There are numerous reasons for this worrisome phenomenon coming into being. To begin with, at present the bulk of people who shop and/or eat out regularly are still poorly-informed, uninformed or misinformed about the pernicious influence that non-biodegradable pollutants exert on the ecosystem, which is the main culprit in the global-scale mishandling of the plastic wastes. The chief component of such trash is polythene, which cannot decompose on landfill sites over the process of the next hundreds of years if no major scientific breakthrough comes along in polythene treatment. Thus, such trash must be dealt with collectively rather than be scattered like tumbleweeds. Secondly, the proliferation of plastic shopping bags and eating ware is largely fuelled by the surging, headlong consumeri*. Plastic containers and utensils are lighter in weight, cheaper (often free of charge) in price and water-proof in performance. These superior properties make them preferable to their paper and cloth counterparts in customers’ eyes; and as consumer satisfaction reigns supreme in contemporary society, compared with superb portability, affordability and utility, how to dispose of them is the last thing the customers are concerned about. Additionally, plastic bags, wrap and containers are also commercially feasible since they are cheaper to manufacture, ship and store. These mercenary considerations also have prompted the good old cloth or paper bags to be supplanted by plastic bags but over the phasing-out process, few stores and restaurants advocate or encourage the use of environmentally-benign disposal of plastic trash, hence the whole slew of non-biodegradable garbage and environmental hazards ensue.
Given the scale and severity of “white pollution”, we must take immediate steps to address this scourge. In the first place, we must do our utmost to enhance people’s awareness of how persistent and devastating non-biodegradable trash can be to our environment and our posterity’s. Secondly, retail stores and dining establishments should spare no effort in encouraging their customers to reuse plastic packing items. Furthermore, indiscriminate and irresponsible dumping of household garbage or personal junk should be outlawed by the legislature and heavy fines or even jail terms must be imposed on those compulsive litterbugs who fail to get their act together. Then, on the part of the biochemical researchers and technologists, scientific research must be launched here and now in pursuit of effectual ways to convert non-biodegradable refuse to biodegradable refuse. Last but not least, the government must not shirk its obligations in mobilizing scientific resources and rallying popular support in the crusade against “white pollution”. Neither should pay just lip service to relevant research and campaigns if no enough funding can be obtained otherwise. Additionally, I am convinced a customer tax levied by the government on the use of plastic bags will also help to curb this massive “white pollution”.
The havoc non-biodegradable refuse can wreak on the ecosystem is beyond our imagination. It can eventually devastate soil, water and the aquatic and terrestrial biota. We must start combating this environmental catastrophe before the ecosystem irretrievably breaks down under the reign of the minute plastic debris.

Topic:Describe an occasion when you ate a kind of food for first time

You should say:

When you had it

Where you ate it

What it was

and how you felt about it.

Last month I tried the Pakistani food for the first time in a restaurant with my friends, and among all the dishes, I like the Biryani best. The restaurant is located near our university, and it is famous for the Pakistani food. At first, I'm not sure I will like it or not, but since every day the restaurant is packed with people, so I went there to have a try.

To my surprise, the food there was so delicious that I thought it was unmatched for flavor. It tasted a little spicy, but suited my taste very well. The dishes were flavored with exotic herbs and spices. I had been to many countries in this world and tried many things, but I had never tasted any other delicious food like this. Pakistani food soon became my favorite food.

I remember that at that time I just failed the exam, and I felt so frustrated that I didn't want to eat anything. But the Pakistani food was so tempting that as soon as I saw it, I started feeling hungry. It was so mouth-watering and scrumptious that I ate it in high quantity. I think Pakistani food has a magic power that can help me forget sadness and cheer up again.

Describe a time when you tried a new food for the first time.

You should say:

what food it was

where you ate it

what it tasted like

and explain whether or not you liked this food

Well, I’m a great fan of barbecues and I would like to talk about the first time I tried some typical barbecue food. This happened when I was 10 years old.

My family went out to have dinner to celebrate my younger sister’s birthday. After putting so much thought into some new savory food to have for our meal, we decided to go to a BBQ restaurant on Ba Trieu Street.

We ordered four dishes with three different tastes. One of them which really interested me was grilled-Australian beef, flavored with something spicy, rich and aromatic. It not only tasted delicious, but also looked appealing. Also, it went well with two kinds of dipping sauces and was served with baguettes. There was also a salad, which gave it a mild taste to contrast with the spicy flavors.

The idea of a barbecue originated in America, and for us it was a novel and sophisticated meal.

What I really enjoyed was that we could watch as it was cooked in front of us. I loved how juicy it was and the aroma it had. Just mentioning it makes my mouth water. I mean, the BBQ was out of this world. That was the first time I had tried it, and I would have liked to have kept on coming back for more, but I was just too full.

I like to eat the pizza outside the home. Pizza is not made in our house except very rare occasion once or twice in a year and that's why I have always eaten it outside my home. Dominous Pizza, Pizza Inn, Helvetia, Tongue & Tommy, CFC are some of my favourite places where I eat pizza.

I like it because it is tasty and delicious. This food item requires only few minutes to be served and I can eat it when I am in hurry. Another reason is the variation this food item has. Several types of pizza can be found and because of that a pizza lover can taste the different types of pizza and variation of those pizzas. It is cheaper compared to other dishes I eat outside. A moderate size pizza can be shared among 3-4 persons. Finally it is not a very rich food and can be eaten any time of a day.

I usually eat pizza once in a week and the frequency of eating pizza sometimes depends on the frequency of my meeting my friends in a restaurant who serves pizza.

Eating pizza is not occasion dependent like some other dishes like Mexican foods, Italian food etc. I mostly eat pizza when I need a quick meal and when I meet my friends in a restaurant. Since pizza is liked by most of my friends, when we sit together in a place where pizza is served and we need to eat something, we mostly order pizza.

Similar Cue Card Topics

Your ability to talk about this Cue Card Topic would also enable you to talk about the following Cue Card Topics as well:

1. Describe your favourite food

2. Describe an outdoor meal you had

3. Describe a food item you often eat

4. Describe a fast food item you like

5. Describe a food you often eat with your friends

6. Describe an outdoor meal or picnic you had

What are the characteristics of a good friend/ describe the person you admired most/describe the person who has great influence on you.

In my opinion, a good friend should possess the following three main characteristics. First, he should be reliable, as it is an essential quality of a good friend. That is, I can trust in him since he will not tell me a bad lie or tell others some of my secrets. Second, he should be helpful. He can give me a hand when I face some trouble or provide me with some suggestions when there is a (dilemma)( 用的很漂亮!)in front of me. Finally, he should be optimistic, since I don’t want to hear a person always complaining every day.

评语:

In my opinion, another valuable quality in my friend is his refusal to admit defeat. Whenever he is confronted with a problem or difficulty, the very first idea that occurs to him is that there must be a solution.

在谈到“Describe a hobby you have”这一话题时,一位考生是这样开场的:

Today I am going to talk about collecting postcards—a hobby that is both fascinating and financially rewarding. I would like to explain the basic kinds of collectible postcards, why they are so valuable, and how collectors buy and sell their cards.

It’s Saturday morning, and you are helping clean out your grandmother’s house. After working a while, you stumble upon a trunk, open it,and discover hundreds of old postcards.Thinking about getting to your driving lesson on time, you start tossing the cards into the trash can.Congratulations! You have just thrown away a year’s tuition.

在谈到“Describe a traffic jam you had experienced before”这一话题时,一位考生的开场白值得大家借鉴:

Traffic jams are more than a nuisance. They are a worldwide economic problem. In Guangzhou alone, they cost 12 million yuan each year.In major U.S.cities,they are responsible for more than 21 billion liters of wasted fuel and 68 billion dollars in lost productivity.Traffic jams will soon cost the British economy more than 20 billion pounds sterling a year.

As I speak today, there is a silent killer hiding near here.Who is this silent killer? Not a robber. Not a thief. Not a criminal. It is high blood pressure.

Question:

What changes took place in education in your country over the past decade?

Answer:

Well, everything is changing, so is education.

The most important change that took place over the past decade is this.

1. increased admission

It seems to me that more and more people are now able to go to college while in the past the competition was much stronger.

College admission is opening up, and this is a direct result of the state policy.

The consequence is that many students who have not reached the level of university education are also allowed to sit in the college classroom, therefore the quality of education has been declining.

2. master’s degree/overseas education

It is because this problem that an increasing number of people are pursuing more education after college graduation. These options include master’s program and possibly overseas education, just like what I’m doing right now. We’re fed up with the boring routine life in college, and we’re fighting for a better future for ourselves.

3. increased tuition

Unfortunately, not every child would have the opportunity to continue their education after college. Why? Simply because going to school is so costly.

The tuition has been almost tripled over the past decade and this presented serious financial pressure that some families cannot handle. So some of my clas*ates have to drop out just because their families ran short of money. Human tragedy! I’m lucky. My mom and dad are making enough money, so I can even go to college in Canada. But I’m not taking this for granted, I’ll be eternally grateful to them.

4. Private training institution

Wherever there’s need, there’s a solution. As more families realized the importance of making education investment in their kids, training demands has been soaring over the past 10 years. Private training institutions such as New Oriental flourished. So as long as you want you will always find a place to study and a class schedule that fits you. Opportunities for personal improvement are many.

范文

I want to learn how to drive recently. I bet it would be a hard time of learning how to drive since you have to prepare a bunch of things. First, you have to remember all the traffic rules and take a test before you touch the car. And then, taking driving lessons in a driving training school is a must. Only in this way can you take a final test and get a driving license. But the hardest part is when you drive in daily life because it is hard to get used to the real situation compared with practicing in the driving school.

People always equate driving with freedom and opportunities, and I agree. Knowing how to drive can bring people a lot of convince. For example, without a car you can't take a job that is not on a bus line. Without a car, you can't hang out with friends late at night, since there is no bus after 10:30 in Beijing. But when I succeed in driving I can ignore those issues.

Why do you think films or books for children so often include animals?

范文

I found there was a bat nest in my balcony recently, and one night I happened to see they flew across the patio under our apartment and hover in the sky. I was shocked, because it was dark outside but they knew exactly where to go without mistakes. Moreover, they went out only at night.

I thought bats are interesting not because they can fly in the dark since I know they are nocturnal animals. I always think the ability which aids bats fly and prey capture is their unusual eye-sight, like another nocturnal animal, owls. But the truth is because of their echolocation. Bat echolocation is a perceptual system where ultrasonic sounds are emitted specifically to produce echoes. By comparing the outgoing pulse with the returning echoes the brain and auditory nervous system can produce detailed images of the bat's surroundings. This allows bats to detect, localize and even classify their prey in complete darkness.

雅思口语范文赏析:a quiz TV show

Describe a quiz TV showWell, it seems that many TV channels like to present some quiz shows to the public, such as “the lucky 52” in CCTV2, “happy dictionary” in CCTV 3, and “great competition of intelligence” in CCTV 1. But here, I’d like to talk about a quiz show from Shenzhen TV channel, which is named as “who is cleverer”.

This quiz show brings the *s back to the primary school class, helps them recall those happy memories in the childhood, recollects those forgotten knowledge. It aims to attract audience of primary school students, as well as *s.

In this quiz show, a group of primary school students and a team of *s are competing on the same stage, for those seemingly familiar and seemingly simple questions from primary school subjects. It is fun to see the embarras*ent of those * compe*s unable to answer those easy questions, and it is also fun to see those primary students showing off their knowledge in front of their * compe*s. Altogether, there are 10 questions for each compe*, and those *s who can answer right all the 10 questions may have a chance to get the prize: 50 thousand YMB , but if he fail, he has to say to the audience, “wow, I am not so clever as a primary school student” and then he is replaced by another *s.

Wow, it’s so funny that after so many years education, almost no *s could win the game and get the prize. And it’s so interesting that this quiz show can bring so many parents and children in front of their TV sets to enjoy their get-together. I like the feeling of watching this kind of TV programs.

A Show or a Performance

Describe a show or performance

You should say:

what kind of performance it was

when and where you saw it

how it was performed

and explain how you felt about this performance.

My friends and I visited Laoshe Teahouse in Beijing last summer. It was our first time to visit such a famous place. We not only had nice tea but also enjoyed Chinese traditional art performances. It has been quite an impressive experience to me, and to my friends, too.

The teahouse is to the southwest of Tian’an Men Square. Its amazing Beijing style has attracted hundreds of visitors from home and abroad every day.

Before we decided to go, we had heard a lot about that place and we got very excited. We got even more excited when the performance was about to begin-audience from different parts of the world made the atmosphere hot. The performance began with a thrilling starting music. It was folk music played with Chinese traditional instruments. by Teahouse Music Band. The drum beats immediately dragged people’s attention. After starting music was Peking Opera Highlights with the name Presents from Magu. I didn’t quite follow its plot because I didn’t understand their singing. However, I like the music and the way it was presented. The most unforgettable show came when an artist from Sichuan started performing Face-Changing of Sichuan Opera. It was just like magic. He changed his face so quickly that no one could tell how he could manage that. This show gained much applause from the audience.

I am glad that I took my friends from the US to the Laoshe Teahouse that evening. We had wonderful time there. I like this kind of performance. It has become a special showcase of the essence of Chinese national culture, and a bridge connecting China with the rest of the world.

Part 3

Artistic Performances

1. Are traditional art forms performed very much in China?

In some *all cities and towns, where popular modern art is less introduced into, traditional art forms are still playing an important role in entertaining local people. In big cities, like Beijing and Shanghai, traditional art forms are kept well and performed a lot in big and *all theatres. I think people are getting more aware of protecting our own traditions, including traditional art performances. And this is why it’s now a fashion to go and watch a really good Beijing Opera show at a not so low price.

2. How does TV program help to spread traditional culture?

TV program helps greatly to spread traditional culture, definitely. For an obvious reason, people have easier access to a TV program than to a live show. Every one can afford it. So, with the help of TV show, more people would have the chance to be exposed to traditional culture.

3. What benefits do you think people derive from watching performances or visiting art exhibitions?

In my opinion, art is not a necessity in our life, like food and drink. But life cannot be without art. Sounds contradictory? Well, I mean, what people derive from watching performances or visiting art exhibitions is mental pleasure and satisfaction. People say art is the reflection of life. I agree. Suppose after a day of hard work, what will a piece of beautiful music bring to us? Comfort, relief, refreshment, and so many other mental enjoyment. Life is hard, but thanks to art, we become less depressed.

4. Do you think people generally prefer to go to a concert or to listen to recordings of music?

Generally, the majority would prefer to listen to recordings of music. It’s much easy to get and every one could afford the money and time. Besides, concert is concert. It’s live, and it’s one-time. You get there, you listen to it, and it’s over. Recordings can be listened to for many times. People choose to listen to their favorite recordings at any time, any place they like to.

The Performing Arts and Children

1. What is the value of watching artistic performance (or experiencing artistic activities) in relation to children's development?

Beauty education is important in children’s development. Watching artistic performance or experiencing artistic activities is a good way to have such an education. It helps children to build up their understanding of this world. They get to know what is beautiful and what is ugly, which is good for their growing-up. But there is one thing we have to be careful about. That is to choose the proper performance and activities, improper ones could only lead to a bad education.

2. What is the value of children learning to perform, such as learning to sing or dance in front of an audience?

It depends on if the child him/herself likes to do it or not. If it’s his/her own willingness to learn, it’s a hobby. Learning to perform will be a pleasant experience. Knowing how to perform could be a treasure for the child’s future development. Performing could be a well-paid occupation. However, if it’s not the child’s own wish to learn, it could be torture and I don’t think the child could get anything positive from the learning.

3. Do you think the performing arts should be included in school curriculums? (Why?/ Why not?)

Performing arts should be included in school curriculums as an optional course, but not a compulsive one. If it’s optional, students with interest can choose to attend the course and develop their performing talent. For students who are not that involved in performing, they can have enough freedom not to choose to attend the course. Otherwise, it would be a waste of time for those who don’t like performing.

4. Do boys and girls have the same feelings/attitudes about performing (or watching) an artistic performance?

For me, it’s a little blind to give a yes-or-no answer to this question. Well, if there is difference, I see it as the difference between individuals, but not between boys and girls. But…well, yes, I guess it’s easier for girls to get involved and become part of the story. I remember when I watched the play Cinderella many years ago, I cried when Cinderella was being tortured, but the boy sitting next to me didn’t.

5. Who do you think is more suited to learning how to dance - boys or girls?

It’s hard to say. We have female dancers as well as many successful male ones dancing on the world stage. I mean male dancers can achieve as high as females dancers do. However it is a fact that more girls are learning how to dance at an early age than boys. The Chinese thinking is like this. Girls have to be pretty, and dancing girls are just fancy. But for boys people hold different expectations. Boys are expected to be playful and tough. It is not seen as a right thing for boys to learn how to dance.

Are you working orstudying-

I am working now. How do you spend your weekends- I spend my weekendsreading and watching TV. Do you read a lot in your spare time- Yes, I read a lotin mysparetime.
