What kinds of famous people are there in your country?
People who become famous in my country are most likely the same type of people that become famous in your country. I believe different things bring about fame. People who are born with special talents and skills, who invent great things that save or improve people’s lives, and who are in power, such as politicians and entrepreneurs, are famous in my country. Public or modern-day heroes who have made great contributions to society are also famous because of their selfless deeds.
What are the differences between famous people today and those in the past?
I think the kinds of achievements or “success” that made people famous in the past are the same today except, in the past, those famous people didn’t receive as much media coverage as these days. The media technology back then wasn’t exactly as advanced as today and the internet was not as accessible as it is today. As a result, the standard for becoming “famous” in the past used to be pretty stiff and high, and as a result, it was not exactly easy to become famous quickly as in these days. Besides, in the past, successful peoples didn’t necessarily chase “fame” with the same intensity as we see today, so the number of “famous” people was relatively much lower.
Do you think famous people are necessarily good in their fields?
No, I don’t think so. Because of social media and the internet, people can easily become famous or “viral” if they create an internet buzz. Those people who become famous in this way are not necessarily the best in their fields, and it is also likely that the reason behind their fame is unrelated to their professions. Rich and powerful people with lots of money are usually famous these days, and being famous today may not require any talent at all.
Do you think the media is putting too much attention on famous people?
As technology is becoming more and more prominent in people’s lives, it is very easy to scroll through news and notifications about famous people on the internet and social media. On one hand, ordinary people are interested in the lives of influential and popular people such as cultural celebrities and sports people. On the other hand, marketing companies and talent agencies are also spending a lot of money on advertisements to promote such stardom and media exposure.
